Description

Idle services are App Service Plans and Virtual Machines that have very little CPU activity over the past 30 days. These services can typically be downscaled or even deleted to save costs.

Criteria

To be considered Idle, a service must fill the following criteria:

  • Average CPU usage for the App Service Plan is under 15% for every hour over the past 30 days
  • Average CPU usage for the Virtual Machine is under 10% for every hour over the past 30 days
  • Resource is not on a Free tier

How to apply

Option 1: Downscale the service

Step 1: To apply this recommendation, click on "View in Portal" to open the Azure Portal on the correct resource.

Step 2: Click on "Scale Up (App Service plan)" in the menu and select a smaller instance size:

For a Virtual Machine, click on "Size":

Step 3: Click on the "Select" button.

Option 2: Delete the service

Step 1: To apply this recommendation, click on "View in Portal" to open the Azure Portal on the correct resource.

Step 2: Click on "Overview" on the right side then click on "Delete" in the top header. This is the same process for both VMs and App Service Plans. IMPORTANT: before deleting make sure that you really no longer need this resource and that you have a backup available. A delete operation is permanent and cannot be undone.

NOTE: You cannot delete an App Service Plan that still has a Web Application assigned to it. You must first delete this application or move it to another App Service Plan.
